The Importance of Mangroves

If you enjoy Cancun as a vacation spot and you already know the Riviera Maya, you have probably seen many mangroves. The mangroves are short trees that rise from a tangle of roots coming out of the water, the set of these wonderful trees forms the mangrove.

Mexico ranks fourth in the extension of these coastal wetlands worldwide after Indonesia, Brazil and Australia with an area of 51,620 km2.
We are lucky to have them since these ecosystems are a wonder of nature. They act as a natural flood control and hurricane barrier system, they also control erosion, protect coasts and improve water quality by functioning as a large biological filter. As if that were not enough, they are home to a wide variety of animals such as the white heron, the ibis, the brown pelican, the frigates, manatees, monkeys, turtles, crocodiles, eagles, crabs, snails, mussels, anemones and many fish.

Manglares de Cancún

Mangrove species are derived from more than 20 plant families and have an unmatched strength. They are trees of terrestrial origin that have evolved and adapted to survive in floods, they have also managed to adapt their leaves to different salinities since they originally live in freshwater but also have contact with salt water.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) declared the first International Mangrove Conservation Day on July 26, 2016.
In the last five years the mangroves area in our country has increased for the first time thanks to a historic investment of 171 million pesos, 5,414 hectares have been restored.
It is very important to recognize the importance of mangroves and the environment in general, thus, more attention is focused on their protection and reforestation.
