The magical experience of the Bioluminicence

Hello again, today on an unrelated Subject about the holidays, or how to travel, I want to share my experience going to a particular natural event near the resorts in Cancun, you can go and be back in a day, I am talking about the Bioluminescence.

What is Bioluminescence?

Playas bioluminiscentes en Cancún

According to Wikipedia, is the Self-production of light by a living organism, that can act as a defense, or an attraction ( for preying) by emitting a colorful light, Example of this include, but are not limited to fireflies, plankton, and Deep sea fish.

You can Find Bioluminescence all around the world, and today I had the pleasure of seeing it on plankton at Isla Holbox ( which is also home of the Whale shark in summer - and its base of their diet ) this microorganism its better appreciated in pitch-black Darkness. In order to do so you have to follow the Lunar calendar carefully, So doing my research I went on December 15th, which was also the date of the Gemidas shooting star event.

The Island of Holbox is relatively big. Still, its populations and urbanized zone in the town is little; you can walk the whole city form all around in less than 1-hour, So the two exterior points of it, are practically inhabitable, the perfect place to see this beautiful light show!

different ways to See it

Punta Mosquito en Cancún

First, and most popular one is the Golf Cart tour - Here they take you to Punta Cocos, which is at the north part of town, there is a natural lagoon there, that is filled with the microorganism, so it’s easy getting there in a Golf Cart, or on your own on a bicycle, the Guide, will give you the explanation about how these creatures Glow in the Dark when feeling threatened by us ( shaking of the water) here you will introduce yourself into the lagoon, that it’s no deeper than the waist. And start experiencing this magical show. The whole thing lasts 1 hour.

2nd one is a Paddle boar tour to Playa Mosquitos, yes, in this one, we have to ride the Waves, and paddle into the sea for about 40 min, to get a bit farther than the last possible hotel on the island, going into a Pitch black Darkness, Good thing the water in Holbox is not too deep, so we could jump off the paddle and start experiencing this magnificent show, doing Angels in the Water, Swimming true it, or just diving into the plankton, the color is a light blue /greenish, but in the pictures, it does seem more like electric blue.

Now, beware, there is no way, your phone or GoPro will capture these pictures, you will need a professional camera with the right setting to capture the image, as I told you before, this organisms cant bee seen at the slight shed of light, You can A take your Camara on the option 1, or ask around wich operator includes the service for an extra charge, Option 2 is out of the question, because the equipment could get wet. So the experience is yours, and it’s one I invite you to Live.

Recap :

Bioluminescence is the effect living creatures do in pitch black situations either to feed themself or to scare predators all over the planet, in the sea the plankton is the primary vessel for this effect, and Holbox is the perfect place to see it, a once in a lifetime experience when on the island, check local weather conditions and lunar calendar, pick the best option for you, golf cart or paddleboard, Enjoy it!

Hope this article can shed some light ( pun intended ) on Activities to enjoy near Solaris resorts in Cancun, something you could brag about to your friends back home, We will keep taking you on journeys through the next year, that will simplify your decision making, and help you find out interesting things to do.
